What Monkey Puzzle Press Publishes

Monkey Puzzle Press is presently on the hunt for memoir and creative nonfiction manuscripts – personal stories about real experiences, lives that have challenged or are presently challenging the status quo.

Monkey Puzzle Press publishes literary novels, memoirs, autobiographies, short story collections, essays, and poetry in book, eBook, and chapbook formats. Monkey Puzzle Press does not publish genre fiction such as mysteries, romances, westerns, fantasies, or science fiction.

Monkey Puzzle Press produces relatively few titles each year and our books reflect the individual tastes of its small staff. Monkey Puzzle Press looks for writing with a unique voice and perspective that instructs, inspires, and entertains the reader.

Monkey Puzzle Press publishes emerging and established authors. All of our authors have had works published in literary magazines or other publications; a CV including a list of prior publications can strengthen your submission. Recent titles include The Fairy Tales Mammals Tell by Elisabeth Sharp McKetta and The Whack-Job Girls by Bonnie ZoBell, with upcoming titles including Burst Fivey & The Eggdroppers by Jack Collom and Down in Denver by Jon Leslie.

How to Submit a Manuscript / Chapbook

We do not accept unsolicited manuscripts. Please send us a query letter first. If you sell us on your query letter, we will ask for a book proposal or a full manuscript. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with every submission or we will be unable to respond. Monkey Puzzle Press does not accept electronic/disc submission. Our response time on query letters is 4-6 weeks. The review process for proposals and full length manuscripts currently takes 4-6 months, possibly longer. Manuscripts that seem appropriate for Monkey Puzzle Press are given several careful readings and the final decision rests with Monkey Puzzle Press’ editor-in-chief, Nate Jordon. We empathize with your anticipation and appreciate your patience when submitting your work to us. Phone calls or letters of inquiry will not hasten the review process. If you would like to know if your materials have been received, and how long it will approximately take for us to reach a decision, please include a self-addressed stamped postcard so we can reply upon receipt.
